STATE STREET FIRE SURVIVORS

On Saturday, January 14th, a fire broke out in a building on State Street, New Haven, directly across the street from New Haven Central Hospital, destroying two apartments. While all the human occupants escaped, six pets were trapped in the blaze. Firefighters quickly found two of them, a dog and one cat, and brought them across the street to our hospital.

Our staff immediately began treating them for smoke inhalation by providing oxygen therapy, establishing intravenous catheters, giving intravenous fluids, running bloodwork and taking x-rays. Mona, the dog, and Sammy, the cat, were in stable but guarded condition by later that day.

The following day, firefighters went back to the scene and were surprised to discover an additional dog hiding in the rubble. Spooky had hidden all night in the burned out remains of his home while temperatures dropped below freezing. He was immediately brought to the hospital where he began receiving care as well.

At this time, all three are doing well and their prognosis has improved thanks to the quick actions of the firefighters and our staff.

Unfortunately, this fire has taken the homes away from a number of people. Our local block association has been quick to put together an effort to get all of these people back on their feet. At this time they are collecting money, clothes, household items, etc.
