VETERINARY COMPUTED TOMOGRAPHY ( CT ) SCANNING
AT NEW HAVEN CENTRAL HOSPITAL FOR VETERINARY MEDICINE

Computed tomography (CT) scans have been used in human medicine since the early seventies. Originally used for imaging the brain, CT scanners are now used to image most parts of the body, particularly the head, chest and abdomen.

CT scanning has now become a more widely used diagnostic tool in veterinary medicine as well.

CT images are made using narrow x-ray beams. An x-ray tube rotates around the patient while moving through the tube and creates an image that is then digitally reconstructed on a computer to create a three dimensional image.

CT imaging has more shades of gray, allowing for the visualization of differences too subtle to be seen on traditional x-ray images. This is especially useful when imaging the nasal cavity; certain conditions of the lungs, the urinary tract and the liver and determining the location and extent of tumors.

Patient positioning is very important when performing CT scans so animals must be sedated or anesthetized for imaging. Your veterinarian will let you know if a CT scan is indicated for your pet.
